Why should you read a novel?

Andrew Miler · June 14, 2026

Tall shelves of old books in a grand library

There is a particular quiet that only a novel can make. It settles in around chapter three, when the room you are sitting in goes a little dim and someone else's street, kitchen, or battlefield becomes the place you live for a while.

Researchers keep finding what devoted readers already know: following a long story strengthens focus, feeds creativity, and builds emotional intelligence. You spend hours inside other minds, rehearsing choices you may never have to make — and understanding people you have not yet met.

A novel also gives you something rarer than information: sustained attention. In a day chopped into notifications, three hundred pages in one direction is almost a meditation. Start with twenty pages a night. Pick a story with a voice you would follow down any alley. The habit does the rest.

That is why we publish the way we do — books built to be finished, remembered, and pressed into friends' hands. If you have not read one in a while, tonight is a good night to begin again.
